Opening Day

Today the Philadelphia Phillies Opened their 2012 season with a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The day started with an emotional first pitch by a blind wounded warrior who threw a perfect strike to get the day started off on a high note. Roy Halladay was on the mound and pitched outstanding going 8 innings allowing only two hits (both in the first inning) and striking out five, walking none, however he did hit two batters. Still this was a sensational opening day start for Halladay. He seemed to be in mid-season form and nothing looked to shake him at all. It took a while for the Phillies to get on the scoreboard as the offense was not exactly lighting it up. It was finally the 7th inning when Wigginton hit a single, Mayberry Jr. hit a double into the right field corner followed by a Carlos Ruiz sac fly to right that scored a sliding Wigginton for the only run of the day. Jonathan Papelbon came in to close things out in the ninth throwing only 10 pitches (9 for strikes) and retiring the Pirates in order.

There are a couple things I would like to comment on, The debut of second baseman Freddy Galvis was not good. he went 0-4 while hitting into two double plays in his first two at bats. I hope its just jitters cause his defense was outstanding in this game. Maybe he was just trying to hard and time will make things better. We will see. Ty Wigginton, John Mayberry Jr, and Carlos Ruiz were fantastic today. All three were clearly the best hitters in the line-up. Lets hope these guys can keep it up at the start of this season. I wont normally add stats and box scores in my posts but I thought I would try it this time to see how it works.
